In the area of Drama there are two main rivers, Nestos and Agitis.

Agitis is the largest tributary of Strymons with a length of about 75 km. It is mentioned from the 5th BC. century by Herodotus and the 1st AD h. by Appian. Along its route, the river crosses part of the Prefecture of Drama where its sources and the homonymous river Cave are located. The water flows from the springs join in the area of the village of Symboli Serres, and from this point the river begins a labyrinthine route between vertical rocks, forming the gorge of the same name of Aggitis, in the area of Alistratis.
